We Are Primordial: Come Join Us

People have been wondering what the hell is going on with all the Primordial Radio stuff I keep putting out, wondering why I incessantly keep imploring anyone and everyone to get involved, to buy even just one share at just over £15 to help ensure that Primordial Radio gets the chance to show the rock and metal community, and everyone else, just what a massive shot in the arm it can be to a musical genre being increasingly chewed up and thrown to the wolves of profit and exploitation.

So, why you ask?

Here is my answer……..

Why Primordial Radio? What is it that makes me so desperate, yes desperate to see this radio station actually see the light of day? Is it having previously listened to Moose, Dews and Pete’s unique brand of rock radio and knowing instantly that what they offered was exactly what I wanted and finding that, apparently a whole army of listeners also wanted? Is it what kept me entertained for every working hour and most of my free time and got me through some pretty crappy times?. Is it wanting to return to the mentally amusing good elements of Team Rock? Or is it the thought that this is quite possibly the last chance the rock and metal community have to have a voice, a home that actually is for us and not just some business model loosely frameworked to give minimum content for maximum profit?
It’s a depressing fact that right now, despite a couple of niche radio shows, the mainstream radio networks do not offer us anything of substance, confining any pittance of scheduling to times that are kept well outside normal listening hours. Whatever market info they are being fed they are missing out on a number of critical factors, and these factors are exactly what will guarantee Primordial Radio success, should it achieve the funding it needs to launch.

  • Loyalty: we have always been outsiders, not just to the media establishments but to society in general. It’s the black leather jacket, studs and chains, bad guys image thing that is still perpetuated to this day. It is used to alienate us, separate us but what it actually does do is make us fiercely loyal to those who share our common interest, rock and metal and the myriad of genres that fall within that loose label; those who treat us as equals and not just as some cash cow who are so desperate for any scraps thrown to us that we will accept being exploited and robbed blind in the process; those who actually want to engage with us and build a home, a community that is actually for us, free of ego and hierarchy, a place we will always come back to. That, to me is what Primordial Radio is offering and in return they will always have my loyalty. It’s OUR home, it’s our ‘Friday night down the pub having a few beers, having a laugh with your mates to a great rock soundtrack in the background’ only this is any time we want it!
  • Longevity: We are going nowhere. We are like a great nomadic tribe wandering in the wilderness, followers of our own brand of religion, a music that enduringly binds us together and always will. Our needs never change much, the only transient thing in this great journey of ours is the place we get to stay for a while before we get moved on for a perceived more profitable market. I am sick of radio stations painting themselves out to be there for the audience when it is so blatantly obvious that they couldn’t give a damn about the listener. Team Rock was the closest thing to feeling part of something until its business model imploded but that feeling came from the dj’s – Moose, Dews and Pete. Primordial Radio has the foundations of everything we need, right there.
  • Passionate: Look around social media at the efforts to get Primordial Radio funded and to get it out on the airwaves and you will see how passionate we are. We so passionately believe in this because we have tasted what this can be and we want more but we want it Primordial Radio flavoured, an offering we are all creating together through a mutual passion for the music and an ethos that we all share.
  • Family: And whilst the main protagonists behind Primordial Radio may be the figureheads, and quite rightly so, cementing this all together is a family, a real, solid, dedicated, passionate, loyal, inspired family. We are a family brought together through a shared common interest standing side by side.

Come join us. We.Are.Primordial.

Go check out the Seedrs funding page and see for yourself why I am pushing like hell to see this through to launch. Even if you can only invest one share or even if you know someone who might be interested, please do whatever you can.

Thank you.

Team Rock: An Abject Lesson In Poor Communication

Most people who listen to rock radio in the UK will be aware that 5 weeks ago last Friday, Team Rock Radio pulled it’s DJ’s from the air and reverted to a looped cycle of talk free radio while they ‘rebranded’. This initially was communicated as a 1 week exercise but at the same time all freelance staff were laid off, including a number of the daytime presenters. Not an unheard of exercise in streamlining dressed up in the clothes of image change.

Then all communication pretty much ceased and 5 weeks later Team Rock Radio still has no responses to numerous requests by concerned listeners about what is happening and when a ‘normal service’ is likely to resume.

And that can only lead to one conclusion and that is the sad reality that Team Rock Radio is dead.

Team Rock had a large core of the listeners who felt extremely engaged by and invested in Team Rock Radio, almost entirely because of a rapport built with and nurtured by the dj’s, to such an extent any prolonged absence shrouded in silence was bound to lead to people asking questions and doing some digging and discover realities.

Sadly, those facts are that Team Rock Limited is in the midst of a catastrophic financial problem to the tune of £8m. This isn’t a rebranding exercise, this is a last ditch attempt to save a failing business that has vastly overreached in an extremely challenging market. And at a time when Team Rock should be looking to retain the support of listeners, listeners who are often also readers of the magazines that look to form the mainstay of the business revenue, they shut up shop and refuse to engage in any way with listeners. An attitude maybe indicative of a poor business sense at best and a premeditated negligent one at worst.

Everyone fully understands the sensitivity and implications of a business going into a consultation phase and obviously the first thought is for the people who have already lost their jobs and also those at risk but when announcements are said to be going to be made and then they are not, it starts to seem like listeners are just being strung along to stop them going elsewhere. Not sure what that will achieve in the long run with no radio station but the outcome is a growing sense of resentment towards Team Rock. And that was totally avoidable. In fact it is actually counter-productive as, whatever is salvaged from the legacy of Team Rock, it will still require the involvement of the same people now feeling alienated to take the subscriptions, put money into the games or to fulfill the other elements of the sustainability model and from talking to a lot of other listeners, I am not sure there is any goodwill left, as people look for an alternative amidst the silence.

And so it’s time to face that reality, that while it was an amazingly exhilarating ride with Moose, JRock, Dewsbury, PeteC, Miss Rach, Sophie K, Muggs and the multitude of others who supplied content, this is the end of the road for Team Rock Radio and we need to think about what is next for us.

What a shockingly woeful treatment of the lifeblood of any business, the end user but in life, you reap what you sow.

Spirit Of Radio: A New (Community) Model Army

Ali, the rare constant throughout my life apart from music and perhaps an unacknowledged thirst for chaos over calm, despairs of these moments; the pause between breaths; the sudden idea leaping into consciousness; the moment the dream never fully realised, never completely measured yet never ever relinquished thus cast into the pit of possibilities and revisited randomly in ‘what next’ moments, returns…….moments just like this.

These are the moments that are dangerous to all around, the moments when the blue touch paper is lit and those I have brought in in a fevered tidal wave of excitement and measured BS1potential are bound to the rocket that is about to explode into their world. I never walk through an idea, I embrace it completely, wholeheartedly and relentlessly and race through it repeatedly, clattering into every hurdle until a solution to everything is found and the implausible becomes an absolutely possible reality.

Although it scares the life out of Ali, with her legal mind and research background, I’m a seat of the pants type person but that is completely underpinned with a knowledge that nothing I have yet tried has failed and I don’t intend to start failing now.

So I have been thinking a lot about music delivery and more specifically internet radio recently, due to obvious circumstances and a dirth of alternatives that come anywhere near the standards that I find engaging enough to keep me interested. And so I took that breath….

And another…..

And I slept on it, a little….. difficult in the heat but more so with the voice inside screaming at me, DO IT!

And after a short time I knew that what was in my heart, what was firmly in my mind was something eminently achievable….. albeit with the right people involved.FTR1

And the people who need to be involved are you, the very people who appreciate what brought us together and the things that made it work, that made it so engagingly, interactively different, that created a community out of the bond with like-minded individuals, a family, a feeling of inclusivity, a feeling of genuinely being part of something that, with the right intent could grow into something we all felt we had invested in and had pride in being associated with.

And to those just along for the ride it was a hugely entertaining experience where the people and music were what mattered.

I am one hundred percent positive that that is still achievable and something that could be nurtured from the ground up and become huge, game-changing even; a community radio type model with every listener as part of the future and success as they want to become invested in being; where input into the foundations and continuity of that success brings its own rewards but where we all continue to encourage and nurture the continued success for the benefit of all.

Sound interesting? Something you would sign up for, maybe consider a very small investment in, subscribe to? We don’t need that many people involved initially to get this off the ground and we have the proven ability to get momentum behind something we believe in,don’t we. Look where it has brought us so far….

Up for it?

The #TRRFam Ultimate Moose and JRock Playlist

There are very few people who can hold an audience in their hands and pull them right in, making them feel as if they were actually in the room, actually part of the whole heady, crazy, loud insanity of the music; who could build a community that would endure a prolonged, enforced absence from the radio waves and have them waiting with baited breath for their return, eager to see what new home they have built for us and what they have in store to sate our thirst; who could take the audience on repeated journeys to promised lands and to reap heady spoils of those adventures……

And while we continue looking for people like that, here’s a #TRRFam playlist dedicated to Moose and JRock….. two of the main protagonists in the ultimate paen to ‘FUCK THAT RADIO’

So fasten your seatbelts, this could be a real train wreck of a ride or it could be a headrush, just as uncertain as we would expect from the masters themselves.

Thanks as always to the #TRRFam for suggestions and continued contributions to the mirth and mayhem. The clock is ticking……..

The InbetweenTheScreams Thrash Through Thursday Special

Here’s the inaugural two tracks to help us get through Thursday and on to Friday maddafaaaaackaaaars……..

First off is the relentless onslaught of metal that is Game Over by Machine Head from the stupendously mental 2014 album Bloodstone and Diamonds

The second is possibly in my TOP 3 METAL tracks of all time. The tempo change 3.30 in is just simply THE BEST tempo change ever. The crescendo into the finish is just a monumental climax of incredible musicianship and Randy’s tortured, twisted vocal delivery is the acidic icing on the perfect cake!!

So here is Lamb of God and Overlord from the incredible Sturm und Drang album.

Check back next Thursday for more InbetweenTheScreams Thursday Thrash tunes or get in touch to make suggestions.

Arnold Schoenberg – Piano Concerto, Op. 42

We Are The Ocean – ARK: Floored Genius?

What do you do when you pull out one of THE songs of 2014?

In ARK, the single taken from the acclaimed album ARK , We Are The Ocean have put together such a musically intense, lyrically majestic piece that they have set their own bar so high they have, as yet, failed to live up to that brutally obvious potential.

Or have they lived up to it?

Let me know what you think.

EDIT: I think this maybe comes over as an overt criticism of We Are The Ocean in general but it is far from it. To me this song is the pinnacle of their work. It’s not that the rest is poor, just that this one song is THAT immense it will quite possibly go down as their defining moment. I would love them to surpass this opus because, if Dan and the boys manage it it will be mindblowing.
